The Changing of the Guard

Author: Robert

An impatient yet buxom waitress makes her way across the dim bar to a table which has held a pair of older gentlemen for the past two hours. "Can I bring you two something, or are you all set?" she says with a polite smile, tainted with just a hint of annoyance.

"Three pints, lass. Our friend will be a'joinin us directly." answers the younger-looking of the two, sliding the girl a 10 dollar bill and a nod.

"Sure.." she says with a sigh and takes the bill, shoving it rather harshly into her black apron. She won't be getting a good turn from that table, she decides as she trudges back across to the long wooden bar.

"Who is joining us, Logan?" Lomis asks timidly, not sure that he didn't already know, or at least was already told.

Logan smiles knowingly at pats his old friend and mentor's hand, "The new Righ is, Lomis. We have come here to welcome him from Boston. You --" the waitress interrupts again, this time putting down the 3 pints of ale and walking away. "You remember...Robert O'Kelly. Hollis O'Kelly's adopted son. "

Lomis bluses a little, "Oh yes...I remember now." he says, taking a long sip of ale to hide his embarrassment.

Logan nods and adds, fishing around in the inside pocket of his coat, "He just arrived from Boston this morning." He pauses to look at the paper, "Let me see. I have his name and all written here." The old man reads, "Robert O'Kelly, ritenamed Heart that Roars. Human born Anthro Galliard, of course of the Fianna." He pauses to make sure Lomis is following, then continues to read quietly, "Hmm... it says here that he has been alpha of every pack he as joined, and Alpha of the sept in Boston for the last 5 years. Oh, and was also the Talesinger of the last Fianna moot." Logan looks up and says to Lomis, "I am glad he decided to return from Edinburgh, we need him here, much more than they need him back there. Besides, he was one of the ones key in our saving the Caern here from the Wyrm. Saved Elder Walks at Night too∑along with that 'Walker named Naydene."

The front door of the 'Black Rose' opens, and in steps a giant of a man in a heavy winter coat amid the swirl of the snow and wind. He stamps his feet to clear the cold from his bones, and the slush from his boots and leans in to speak with the hostess. The hostess visibly blushes as a compliment is given along with the question, and she points the man towards the pair of elderly gentlemen sitting in a shadowed booth in the far corner of the establishment. A courteous nod and bright smile later, the man starts across the floor. He lets the coat slide from his muscular shoulders and carries it in the bend of his arm, patting it down so that it isn't is his way as he walks. Slowing his approach, he runs a hand through his short dark hair and brushes the front of his suit-coat down, not wanting to look like a slob to the gentlemen he is about to speak with. However, even the casual observer will notice the he looks extremely uncomfortable in such attire, with the small silver loops in his ears, and the tattoo that extends from just under his right ear down the collar of the back of his shirt, practically screaming 'get me out of this suit!'

Lomis and Logan do not notice him as he approaches, "Excuse me. Elder O'Riley, Elder Callahan? I am Robert O'Kelly." He speaks with a low voice and reverently bows his head. The pair of gentlemen smile and Logan Callahan says, "Ahhh... Robert. It is good to see you again, lad. Come... a pint is here waiting for ya." He slides over just a bit in the booth and pats the seat next to him, "Come... we have much to talk about."
